Android 16: Features to Expect in the Upcoming Major Update

Google has taken its time with the release of Android 15, even launching the new Pixel 9 models with the previous version, Android 14. However, it appears that the tech giant is ready to accelerate things with Android 16, which is expected to debut in the first half of the year. Developers can also look forward to an initial preview soon.

Android 16: A Shift in Naming Strategy

Not only will the release timeline for Android 16 be different, but Google is also breaking its long-standing tradition of naming Android versions after desserts. Since version 1.5, Android releases have followed an alphabetical pattern, starting with “Cupcake” in Android 1.5, followed by “Donut,” “Eclair,” and culminating with Android 15 being dubbed “Vanilla Ice Cream.”

Traditionally, we would anticipate that the codename for Android 16 would start with the letter “W.” Contrarily, as noted by Android expert Mishaal Rahman, the next Android version will be called “Baklava.” Instead of the expected “Waffle,” this name choice coincides with significant backend changes in Android.

Features of Android 16 Sneaking into Android 15

Although Google has yet to confirm specific features for Android 16, insights from quarterly updates (QPR) suggest what may be included. Google employs a trunk-based development model, allowing developers to work on a single, central branch while utilizing “flags” to enable certain features or APIs in specific builds. This approach has allowed for the activation of unofficial and unannounced features, as frequently shown by Mishaal Rahman’s investigative reports.

It’s crucial to note that the functionality of these features may change before the final release, and some may even roll out in earlier QPR versions.

Revamping Notifications and Quick Settings

One of the anticipated changes for Android 16 includes the redesign of notifications and quick settings, potentially dividing them into two sections, reminiscent of Apple’s iOS. Rahman has demonstrated a new version of this feature, showing that the notification shade no longer occupies the entire screen, allowing users to see the active app beneath it.

Additionally, this new layout introduces a single-finger swipe to access notifications while a two-finger gesture opens quick settings. This modification may invite criticism, as the current setup allows users to view both sections with a single gesture. However, future iterations of the feature may eliminate the need for a two-finger swipe.

Potential New Features and Enhancements

Android 16 may introduce the long-awaited capability for displaying any app in a floating “bubble,” expanding on the functionality that has existed for chat applications since Android 11. Rahman suggests that Google could implement this feature across all apps, facilitating temporary links in bubble form for browsers, utilities, and more.

Another feature making its debut could be the “Notification Cooldown,” which is designed to reduce notification noise during busy chat conversations. Initially expected with Android 15, it is now anticipated for Android 16, ensuring that only the first message sounds at full volume, with subsequent messages playing more quietly.

As the release date approaches, with expectations set for the second quarter, Android enthusiasts are eager to see the innovations that Google has in store. With a potential launch around June 3, 2025, this version aims to roll out significantly earlier than its predecessors, which were typically released between August and October.
