Cloud Showdown with Microsoft: Google Turns to Its Final Strategy

Since 2019, new licensing agreements have reportedly compelled Microsoft customers to utilize its own cloud platform, Azure. Those who have opted for alternative providers, such as Google, while using Office products or Windows servers have faced alleged license fees that can soar by as much as 400 percent.

Technical Justifications Under Scrutiny

Google has criticized Microsoft for lacking any technical justification for these price hikes. After attempts to reach an amicable resolution failed, Google felt it had no choice but to file a formal complaint with the EU Commission, citing anti-competitive practices.

In a blog post on September 25, 2024, Google pointed out that the exorbitant pricing is just part of the problem. Customers using other cloud providers have also reported receiving inadequate security updates. Just five years prior, Microsoft users faced no obstacles when choosing alternative service providers.

Call for Fair Competition

According to Google, the time has come for the EU to ensure equitable competitive conditions. Approximately two-thirds of businesses in Europe have only migrated less than half of their data to the cloud. There is concern that these controversial practices may lead to significant opportunities being missed for the companies that are being affected.

Google Cloud manager Amit Zavery emphasized that the EU must take action before it’s too late, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Market Concentration Poses Security Threats

Additionally, Google has raised concerns about the risks associated with too much concentration in the cloud market dominated by Azure. A failure or cyberattack on such a large infrastructure can lead to devastating repercussions, making the stakes significantly higher for all users.

In recent months, Azure has indeed faced several outages and security issues, although Amazon’s AWS remains the clear leader in the global cloud market.

Microsoft’s Settlement with European Firms

Another factor that may lead Microsoft to anticipate the dismissal of Google’s complaint by the EU is its recent agreement with the member companies of the cloud computing organization, Cispe. This agreement, reached in July 2024, reportedly included millions in compensation.

Cispe had echoed similar concerns raised by Google regarding Microsoft’s practices. As part of the settlement, Microsoft has committed to revising its licensing agreements, addressing competition-related concerns.

Microsoft Optimistic About EU’s Response

Microsoft appears to be confident that the EU Commission will not be swayed by Google’s claims. A Microsoft spokesperson indicated that Google had expected Cispe companies to continue pursuing legal action, but since Google failed to convince them otherwise, Microsoft believes the EU will reach the same conclusion.
