How Google Aims to Protect You from Malware and Fraudulent Calls Using AI

Following the introduction of AI-driven theft protection for Android smartphones, Google is rolling out another feature that was announced in May 2024. The company aims to ensure that its AI security enhancements are not exclusive to Pixel smartphones.

Enhanced Threat Detection: Google Upgrades “Play Protect” with AI

With this latest AI innovation, Pixel smartphones will alert users to suspicious or potentially fraudulent app activities. This is achieved through a device-based AI that evaluates app behavior in real-time. If the AI detects patterns commonly associated with malware, users will receive instant notifications.

According to Google, the focus of this real-time threat detection is on malware apps that are particularly difficult to identify and that obscure their intentions effectively. Moreover, Google’s “Play Protect” will no longer just scan for harmful code upon app installation but will also monitor for signs of suspicious behavior after the apps are installed.

This proactive approach aims to catch malware that may remain dormant initially and later engage in malicious actions. Google asserts that these security measures will occur directly on the device within a secure and isolated environment known as the “Private Compute Core,” ensuring that no data is collected or transmitted to Google or any third parties.

Initial Focus: Combating Stalkerware

Initially, the “Live Threat Detection” feature will chiefly target what is known as stalkerware, which refers to apps that collect personal or sensitive information without the user’s consent for monitoring purposes. Google is also exploring the possibility of expanding this detection capability to cover additional types of malware in the future.

Pixel Exclusivity and Broader Android Integration

While this new protective feature will first be available on Google’s own devices starting with the Pixel 6, the company has already announced plans in May 2024 to collaborate with other hardware partners to extend this new malware protection to their devices as well.

In addition to Pixel devices, brands such as Honor, Lenovo, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, Sharp, Transsion, and others are expected to implement real-time threat detection by the end of this year. Notably, major players like Samsung and Xiaomi have not been mentioned in this rollout.

New Scam Call Alerts: A Secondary Feature for U.S. Users

In addition to malware detection, Google is introducing a second AI feature for Pixel devices, initially available in the United States: the ability to identify fraudulent calls. This feature will alert users during a call if the AI recognizes patterns typical of scams.

Similar to the malware detection feature, this scam call recognition operates directly on the device and is isolated from the rest of the system, ensuring no data is collected. Additionally, this feature is turned off by default, giving users the choice to activate it.
