For several months now, Bluesky has been making headlines, particularly when waves of dissatisfied users from X (formerly known as Twitter) seek out a new digital refuge. Today, Bluesky boasts over 16 million users, a testament to its growing popularity amidst the social media landscape.

Finding Your X Connections on Bluesky

Following the election of Donald Trump as the new President of the United States, Bluesky experienced a surge, gaining three million new users in just one week. But how can former X contacts be rediscovered on Bluesky without the hassle of sifting through endless lists?

One effective solution is to use the browser extension called Sky Follower Bridge, created by developer Kawamata Ryo. This tool helps identify X contacts who have also migrated to Bluesky.

The extension requires either Google Chrome or another Chromium-based browser that supports extensions. You can find the Sky Follower Bridge available for installation online.

Requirements for Using the Extension

According to tech experts at Cnet, it is advisable to pin the extension to the toolbar after installation for easier future access. Once activated, users can commence the process of connecting with their X contacts on Bluesky.

Begin by logging into your Bluesky account through Chrome and setting up an additional app password. If you can’t locate this option in your settings, click here for guidance.

Next, copy the app password and log into your X account. Click on “Followers” in your profile to view all your followers. After this, you can activate the extension and enter your Bluesky username along with the new app password you just created.

Scanning Your X Contacts

Once these steps are completed, the extension will automatically scan through your follower list to find those who also have a Bluesky account. However, it’s worth noting that it can only detect those who have chosen the same or very similar usernames on Bluesky as they did on X.

Additionally, there is a chance that followers with identical names on X and Bluesky might not be the same individuals. Therefore, a degree of caution is advised while using this tool.

If the extension successfully identifies any of your followers or people you follow on X, you can follow them on Bluesky with just a click, streamlining the reconnection process.

How Effective is the Extension?

In a brief test, the author discovered approximately 100 individuals among their X contacts who are also present on Bluesky, out of nearly 2,300 followers. Some additional connections were later found manually, enhancing the effectiveness of this tool.

According to other users, re-initiating the search via the “find more” option might yield better results. Overall, the long-term efficacy of the Sky Follower Bridge remains to be seen, and more extensive testing is necessary to validate its claims.
