Launch Delayed Until 2025

As tech giants like Google and Apple enhance their virtual assistants with advanced generative AI, Amazon appears to be lagging behind.

Currently, Amazon is focused on developing a new version of its virtual assistant, Alexa. However, significant challenges are hindering its timely release. The most pressing issue is the slow response time, which severely impacts user experience.

Internal documents have disclosed that Alexa’s AI is taking too long to process requests, disappointing testers in the process. Despite having set multiple deadlines for a potential launch in 2024—one of which is as close as November 14—Amazon has been forced to postpone the rollout.

For a successful launch, Amazon had aimed for a satisfaction rating of 5.5 out of 7 from testers. Unfortunately, the current ratings fall short of expectations, with an average score of just 4.57. This inadequate evaluation highlights the shortcomings of the new AI, particularly its high latency.

Another critical issue is the lack of compatibility with older Alexa devices, which could frustrate existing users. There are concerns that this incompatibility might necessitate a costly upgrade for users wishing to leverage the advanced AI features, a common dilemma in the tech sector.

A Missed Opportunity for Claude AI?

A recent leak raised eyebrows by failing to include any reference to Claude AI, an assistant developed by Anthropic. A collaboration with Amazon could have propelled Alexa ahead of competitors by combining its voice capabilities with Claude’s analytical prowess. It remains uncertain whether this partnership is still viable or has been abandoned.

Regardless, the leak suggests that improvements may have been made since the memos were drafted, although these details remain unclear.

Beyond the delays, Amazon has ambitious plans for enhancing Alexa. The goal is to enable the assistant to autonomously manage more complex tasks. For instance, Alexa could directly place an order for food or book movie tickets without relying on third-party applications.

However, this evolution will hinge on user trust. The assistant must demonstrate its ability to execute commands accurately without the risk of errors. A single misstep could be costly for Amazon, both financially and in terms of its reputation.
