OpenAI Delays GPT-5 Release, Focuses on Developing Autonomous AI Agents

Since the introduction of ChatGPT nearly two years ago, OpenAI has made numerous enhancements to its GPT model. Currently, the latest iteration is the GPT-4o Mini, which boasts improved capabilities and delivers more accurate responses. Meanwhile, under the leadership of Sam Altman, the company has also unveiled a new model referred to as Strawberry, or OpenAI o1. This raises an intriguing question: will we see the release of GPT-5, or is OpenAI shifting its focus toward refining its existing models?

According to Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the organization is currently facing challenges with the development of a new language model, potentially GPT-5.

“Our GPT models have become increasingly complex, which makes it difficult to launch another large language model (LLM) at this time. Instead, we must concentrate on optimizing our previous models,” he noted.

This indicates that OpenAI is prioritizing other projects over the creation of GPT-5. But what exactly is taking precedence?

OpenAI Focuses on Deploying o1 Models Instead of GPT-5

In September, OpenAI released a preliminary version of the o1 model, which is designed with exceptional reasoning capabilities. This innovation aims to bring the organization closer to achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Two versions of this model have been introduced: the Mini and the Preview. Users with free accounts can access the GPT-4o Mini, which operates faster and is more lightweight, at a cost 80% less than the GPT-4o Preview.

However, a significant challenge lies in the fact that OpenAI cannot launch multiple LLMs simultaneously, as this would compromise the computational power of its models.

Consequently, the company has opted to prioritize the Q model, part of the o1 series, and postpone the development of GPT-5, which may be considered next year.

Are AI Agents the Key to Achieving AGI?

In today’s competitive landscape, products like Microsoft Copilot, Claude AI, and ChatGPT face substantial rivals, including Google’s Project Jarvis, details of which can be found in other articles.

Many of these chatbots are now capable of performing tasks autonomously, without human intervention.

To stay ahead of the competition, OpenAI is developing autonomous AI agents, with plans to launch these innovations by 2025.

But is this the right approach to compete with giants like Google, Anthropic, Meta, and Apple? Sam Altman believes that OpenAI should, in a few years, be able to create an AI that surpasses human intelligence.
