Brin sought confirmation from his team regarding Jobs’ accusations. Alan Eustace, a former Senior Vice President at Google, informed Brin that he had been trying for over two months to recruit a developer from Apple’s Safari team.

He remarked, “This individual is undoubtedly one of the world’s best in browser technology.” It wasn’t just Google interested in this talented developer; according to the emails, he was also in discussions with Mozilla and a startup company.

Arnnon Geshuri, who was the Senior Director of Human Resources and Staffing at Google at the time, also chimed in, revealing that a Google employee had referred three additional developers from the Safari team to the company.

Steve Jobs Continues His Campaign

It appears that Jobs’ allegations were not without merit, as he continued to reach out to Google executives. Larry Page, who would later become the CEO of Google, recounted receiving angry calls from Jobs. Page stated, “Steve just called me again, furious that we are still recruiting his browser engineers.”

In a final call to Sergey Brin, Jobs reportedly became quite irate. He exclaimed, “If you hire even one of these individuals, it means war.” He demanded that Brin retract any job offers extended to Safari employees.

In response, Brin proposed a compromise to his team: they would allow the offer to stand for one of the Safari developers but would refrain from making any new offers without first securing permission from Apple.
