Support for Windows 10 will officially end in October 2025, posing a significant challenge for numerous users. Microsoft will cease to provide free software updates or security patches after this date. According to the statistics website Statscounter, Windows 10 was still installed on approximately 61% of desktop computers as of October 2024. In contrast, while Windows 11 has gained traction since its release in November 2023, it is currently running on only 35.6% of PCs. Clearly, the predecessor remains far more popular among users compared to the latest operating system.

This trend may be influenced by the frequent negative reports surrounding malfunctioning updates for Windows 11. Furthermore, not every computer that runs Windows 10 is compatible with Windows 11 due to stringent hardware requirements set by Microsoft. As a result, the company often recommends that owners of older hardware consider purchasing a new computer when contemplating an upgrade to Windows 11. Market research firm Canalys even projected at the end of 2023 that the shift to the new operating system could render 240 million computers obsolete.

However, there’s no need to reach that point. Once the support for Windows 10 lapses, users have several alternatives to continue using their computers or laptops without transitioning to Windows 11.

Consider Installing Linux

A practical solution for many users is to install an alternative operating system, with Linux distributions such as Ubuntu being a common choice. This version is available for free download from Canonical Ubuntu and is user-friendly. Because Ubuntu is widely used, users can easily find assistance online should they encounter any issues. The transition requires some adjustment, particularly regarding pre-installed programs; for example, instead of using Edge, you’ll browse with Firefox, and manage emails through Thunderbird rather than Outlook.

For gamers, the switch to Linux may require some effort. While Steam games can run on Linux Ubuntu, configuring certain settings might involve using the terminal, and in some cases, specific games may not be playable. It’s advisable to research this aspect before making the switch.

Another viable alternative to Ubuntu is Linux Mint, which features a user interface that closely resembles Windows, including a Start menu.

If you own an older computer or notebook, you might want to consider Chrome OS Flex. This modified version of the Chromebook operating system is designed to be straightforward, well-organized, and quick to install. Google also provides regular security updates for Chrome OS Flex. This option is particularly beneficial for those who are already invested in Google’s cloud services, such as Google Docs, Photos, or Gmail. However, it’s important to note that unlike Chromebooks, you cannot install applications from the Play Store on this operating system, limiting its functionality to the Chrome browser and a basic desktop interface.

Businesses can continue using Windows 10 for up to three years with this extension, while individual users are limited to a mere twelve months, lasting until October 2026.

Considering a New Computer

If the aforementioned options don’t appeal to you, it may be time to seriously consider investing in a new computer. It’s not advisable to surf the internet on an unsupported operating system. Fortunately, upgrading doesn’t necessarily mean choosing a computer with Windows 11. For example, Apple recently launched the new Mac Mini featuring an M4 processor, starting at 699 Euros. This compact machine offers a solid price-to-performance ratio, but do keep in mind that you’ll need to acquire a mouse, keyboard, and monitor separately.
